Are dissertations meant to be this fun?

It's 2am. I'm in the library. I've been here since 4 this afternoon. I'm having so much fun!

I changed my film essay from a worthy but entirely depressing analysis of the representation of paedophiles in contemporary Hollywood cinema to one about vampires as signifiers of queer sexuality, and now i get to sit here for hours on end reading essays about Buffy, my favourite television show of all time.

I completely realize that it's dissertations like this that give film studies a bad name, but when i can spend 10 hours reading critical essays which make me laugh out loud, cry a little bit and make me excited to write 8000 words in the next 2 weeks, I really don't see how that's a problem.

Oh i do love being a geek.

The wild and the tame.

So I'm feeling slightly better today. Freaking out slightly less. Staying in bed pretty much all of yesterday eating yogurt and watching Buffy definitely helped. (Yes mum, I took your second piece of advice and wallowed. No exercise for me!)

I still have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, and it terrifies me, but i realize I'm unbelievably lucky, and that i have many many options, and that I'm mainly scared of choosing what to do first. I'll figure it out.

As for right now, it's the sunniest day of the year so far, I'm covered head to toe in sunscreen, and I'm on campus, in the library, reading about clones. Such is life.

It was all yellow

Feeling very yellow today. Yellow is my favourite colour, it brightens my mood. I wish I weren't so pale so I could wear it every day.

Had a wonderful weekend with my friends Henrik and Mercy, drinking wine, eating far too much sugar and watching series 4 of Friends. It brought me out of the foul mood i was in last week, and hopefully my joy and energy will continue throughout this week as i start rehearsals for Antigone.

keep it wonky

"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to."

A dying art

I've just found the most wonderful website.
It is called letters of note and every day they post a new letter from some interesting person or other. I've just lost a couple of hours browsing and it makes me want to sen letters to everyone i know. We may live in the digital age, but i think email has as many downsides as it has perks. Yes it is faster, but emails don't last like letters do.

This one is kind of fascinating.

This one makes me happy.

This one made me cry.

This one is really beautiful.

When i was in the States this past October we visited my godparent's house and Kelly, my godmother, had a big box of letters and notes that my mum had sent her from when they were about 11 right up until about a week before i was born. I spent most of the weekend sitting on the sofa reading them. I felt like i was getting to know my mum as a kid instead of as my mother, and it was amazing. If email or facebook had been around back then i would never have seen any of them.
It makes me sad to think that my children won't have a big box of all the stupid notes i send to Kelsea that they can find in an attic when they're 21.
Who knows though, maybe they'll read this blog...

The reason...

If ever another reason was needed to love Joey Comeau, his little bit of writing under todays "A Softer World" would be it.

"When summer starts, there are suddenly an awful lot of very pretty people dressed in summer clothes, which are sexy in a different way from winter clothes. And I find myself swinging wildly back and forth between thinking, "Calm down, Joey. These are real people, who should be treated with respect. I wonder what she thinks of that book she's reading?" and half a second later thinking, "I want to spend the rest of my life just kissing that one spot on her neck oh god oh god."

He is too adorable.

If you aren't in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?

Our difficulties of the moment must always be dealt with somehow, but our permanent difficulties are difficulties of every moment.
T. S. Eliot

So my friend killed himself this weekend, and the day after i found that out, my dog died. It's been a pretty shit week, but i'm getting through with Gatsby, Buffy, lots of green tea and hugs. Last week i watched this amazing film called Wristcutters: a love story, about where people go when they kill themselves. It's a really lovely film, and thinking about it is oddly comforting, because the characters become happier after their deaths, without any of that sitting on a cloud playing a harp type crap.
Anyway, i thought you might want to see the trailer. It's a hard to find film, never got a UK release, but it's amazing and has an awesome soundtrack and has Tom Waits and Will Arnett and Shannyn Sossamon in it. Enjoy.

This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper.

And just to make you guys smile, here's my favourite photo of wilf.

I hope you're all having a better week than i am.

Fear not for the future, weep not for the past.

If i was one for making new years resolutions, i guess that would be it. I'm bored of regretting things. I've only been 20 for 2 weeks and there are already things i regret not doing, so i say that this is the year i say "fuck it" and give things a go.
If this backfires horribly, at least i'll have tried. In the (hopefully) unlikely event of my death as a result of this decision, i want my remains put in fireworks and shot over the south bank.

Here are some quotes i found which i hope are more inspirational than cheesy.
If i don't write before new years then i hope you have a good one. Start as you mean to go on.

André Gide:
The most decisive actions of our life ... are most often unconsidered actions.

Mark Twain:
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Mark Twain:
Let us so live that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry.

Isaac Asimov:
If my doctor told me I had only six minutes to live, I wouldn't brood. I'd type a little faster.

I thought that one was particularly appropriate for the blog, although, if i did only have 6 minutes to live, i'd probably spend part of it on the phone, because there are some things which should be said rather than written, and i'd hopefully be near someone i could kiss, so i could go out with a bang!
Have a good one.

Your manias become science

As anyone who knows me (and i assume that the very small amount of people who read this blog do know me, because why else would they be interested in my inane ramblings) will undoubtedly know, i have a fetish.

This fetish is not anything to do with rubber, whips, chains, animals or children (despite what i may sometimes allude to when bored or in the mood to shock or offend). No, my fetish is much more severe. Not recognized by society, shunned to the backwaters and byways of sexual misconduct, it is my burden alone, a lust i must carry around furtively, lest i am discovered for the deviant i undoubtedly am.

"What is this twisted fascination for?" i hear you whisper (you little perverts, desperate for your latest taste of the taboo!). Well, my little chickadees, let me tell you now, gather close, this must travel no further. My object of lust, that which i cannot live without, which i crave regardless of the strain on my wallet and my social standing, is none other than the humble notebook.

This may sound tame, but think of it this way; looking around my roughly 6 by 12 foot university dorm room i can see no less than 11 notebook, obviously not including those which i use for my classes. These 11 books are purely for extra curricular note taking, and have been painstakingly chosen by me, taking into account how they look, what the paper inside is like, whether they are lined or blank, if they are lined, how close and what colour the lines are, and most importantly whether they are a pleasant weight.

There is no real reason for this mildly perverse post other than to share some notes from these vaulted tomes; quotes and notations which make me smile or think or remember. Some of them i've had written down for years, some of which i may have written down yesterday. It makes no difference, they are mine to share with you.

My smallest book, which i bought while at NYFA in Paris, and which consequently makes me think of Karima and Zane, has mainly quotes, mostly from art pieces in the Centre Pompidou. A select few include:

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth.

Every society honours its live conformists and its dead troublemakers.

Cursing and fumbling
with flesh
smelling flesh
clutching flesh
sucking violently
on flesh
cleaning up flesh
smiling at flesh.

Into some dessicated realm of beauty
the hand desired
but the heart refrained.

Something good will happen.

Another notebook of mine, dating from just before i moved to Bahrain, and containing embroidery and drawing as well as writing, contains the following:

"He who approaches the temple of muses without inspiration in the belief that craftsmanship alone suffices will remain a bungler and his presumptuous poetry will be obscured by the songs of the maniacs." Plato.

An A5 sketchbook which i stole during my first week at Frensham, which is full almost to bursting with stuck in photos and articles, contains more wise words, such as excerpts from Romeo and Juliet:
"If i profane with my unworthiest hand
this holy shrine, the gentle sin is this,
my lips two blushing pilgrims ready stand
to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss."

And from the great American novel, The Great Gatsby:
"I wouldn't ask too much of her" i ventured. "You can't repeat the past."
"can't repeat the past?" he cried incredulously, "why of course you can!"

A description of Marylin Monroe from the last photo shoot:
"she was the wind,
that comet shape that Blake draws blowing around a sacred figure.
She was the light,
and the goddess
and the moon.
The space
and the dream.
The mystery
and the danger

A quote i loved from "The Wide Sargasso Sea"
Made for loving?
Yes, but she'll have no lover,
for i don't want her
and she'll have no other.

And very finally, a Mel Brooks quote, which i think sums up everything quite nicely:
Tragedy is when i get a papercut.
Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.

Enough rambling, it's past 3 and i have a lecture in the morning, for which i get to break in a whole new notebook!
